Looks like starting tomorrow, the NY Times is handcuffing its content. Rather, handcuffing its readers. Times Select, they’re calling it. $40 bucks a year if you sign up by today, $50 otherwise. Sure, some of the stuff will be free, but the good stuff, the Maureen Dowd articles, well, that’ll cost you. However, in addition to the current content, the subscription will get you access to 100 archived articles a month. And, if you subscribe to home delivery, then it’ll be free. What to do, what to do. (Anyone want to split a subscription?)

I’m pissed!
Missing out on Maureen Dowd columns? Let me help you out:
Column 1: “I would love to tell you how misguided conservatives are, but my Red State (ex-)family would lynch me for besmirching their honor.”
Column 2: “Katrina devistated New Orleans because of the war in Iraq.”
Column 3: “Bush is a poopyhead.”
Column 4: “Cheney is a ugly poopyhead.”
Seriously, I’ve been reading the Times’ Op-Ed page for years, and over the course of W’s administration, Maureen Dowd has completely lost it.
That old “please buy the cow even though you have been getting the milk free for years” thing may apply here. I am interested to see how this will turn out.
I think even the NYT is lost and trying to feel its way about the new online info business paradigm. Do you give it away? Sell it? What?
My gut feeling: just offer ad-free content with a reduced subscription. It can’t possibly cost $50 a year per person to keep it online, can it?
oh this sucks. Are you kidding me?

Never thought I’d be searching for Dowd bootlegs on LimeWire.
